The Great Unconformity is a major stratigraphic discontinuity in the geologic record that represents an interruption in the deposition of sedimentary rocks. The Great Unconformity was first described in the late 19th century by the American geologist James Hall. He noticed that there was an unconformity between the Cambrian and Precambrian strata in the Appalachian Mountains. Hall initially used the term ‘Great Unconformity’ to describe the unconformity in the Appalachians (Hall, 2019).
