The Role of VLDL in Triglyceride Transport from Intestine to Other Tissues
Very Low-Density Lipoprotein (VLDL) is a class of human plasma lipoprotein responsible for the transport of triglycerides from the intestine to other tissues. This triglyceride transport is necessary for the energy storage and metabolism of the body. VLDL is composed of a core of triglyceride molecules surrounded by a phospholipid monolayer and is produced in the liver (Goyal et al., 2020). VLDL is secreted into the bloodstream and binds to lipoprotein lipase (LPL) enzymes present on the surface of endothelial cells in other tissues. This binding of VLDL to LPL leads to the hydrolysis of triglycerides within the VLDL, providing the other tissues with a source of energy (Abel et al., 2017). In addition to the transportation of triglycerides, VLDL also carries cholesterol. Cholesterol esters, which are formed by the action of cholesterol ester transfer protein (CETP), are also present in VLDL (Razavi et al., 2016). The cholesterol esters are taken up by low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptors in other tissues, providing them with cholesterol. VLDL also plays a role in the regulation of cholesterol levels in the blood (Kassis et al., 2021). Cont…
