The Risk of Recurring Victimization After an Aggravated Assault

The risk of recurring victimization after an aggravated assault is real, as evidenced by risk factors outlined in the text such as age, gender, and location. For instance, younger victims are more likely to experience subsequent victimization, particularly if they are male (Siegel, 2018). Certain locations can also be more vulnerable to criminal activity, and thus victims who live in such areas may be at a higher risk of being targeted again (Siegel, 2018). In terms of risk heterogeneity, this theory states that victims are likely to experience repeated victimization due to their distinct risk factors (Siegel, 2018). This could apply to me since I am a younger male living in an area with a higher risk of criminal activity. On the other hand, state dependence suggests that victims of prior offenses are more likely to experience subsequent victimization due to their previous experiences, regardless of individual risk factors (Siegel, 2018).
