The Relationship between Weathering, Mass Wasting and Erosion
Weathering, mass wasting and erosion are all integral components of the rock cycle. Weathering is the physical and chemical breakdown of rocks on the surface due to exposure to elements such as temperature changes, water, wind and ice. Mass wasting is the downhill movement of loose rock material due to gravity, and erosion is the process of sediment being moved by gravity or water and deposited elsewhere (Ritter and Miller, 2019). All three processes of denudation are closely related and often occur simultaneously. Two types of mass wasting are landslides and creep. A landslide is a rapid movement of a large mass of rock and debris down a steep slope (Meyer, 2020). Landslides are often triggered by heavy rain or snow, earthquakes and steep slopes. In contrast, creep is a slow, continuous movement of soil that is usually caused by gravity and pressure. Creep is usually caused by a combination of climate and geology, including temperature and humidity changes, clay minerals, and the presence of groundwater (Ritter and Miller, 2019). An example of a landslide can be found in the Appalachian Mountains of North America, while creep is more common in tropical regions such as the Amazon Rainforest. Cont…
