The Need for Equitable, Inclusive, and Diverse Police Agencies in Controlling Behavior

The best avenue for controlling behavior in police agencies is to ensure equitable, inclusive, and diverse environments. In order to do this, police agencies must be willing to examine their current practices and policies, and identify any disparities, biases, or discriminatory practices that may be present. This can include developing a system of accountability, transparency, and respect for all individuals, regardless of their race, gender, sexual orientation, or other identity markers. In addition, police agencies should take steps to recruit and hire individuals who represent the full spectrum of the communities they serve, and provide training to all officers on how to effectively engage with marginalized populations (Anderson & Smith, 2013; Thompson, 2019). The issues surrounding equity, diversity, and inclusion are integral to controlling behavior at the individual level. When police officers are exposed to training on how to effectively engage with individuals from diverse backgrounds, they are better able to understand the needs of those they are interacting with and use appropriate techniques to de-escalate situations.
