The Molecular Formula of Cadaverine: A Combustion Analysis
Cadaverine is a foul-smelling compound produced by rotting animal tissue such as road kill (Morrison, 2019). It contains only C, H and N, and can be identified by its distinctive odour (Morrison, 2019). Through a combustion analysis, the molecular formula of cadaverine may be determined. In combustion analysis, a sample of the compound is burned, and the products of the combustion are measured (Khan, 2019). By measuring the amount of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Water (H2O) produced, the molecular formula of the compound can be determined. In this experiment, 3.75g of a sample of cadaverine underwent combustion analysis. The results of the analysis showed that 8.08g of CO2 and 4.63g of H2O were produced (Khan, 2019). Using the molar mass of cadaverine (102.18g/mol) and the law of conservation of mass, the molecular formula of cadaverine can be calculated. The answer is C5H12N2, indicating that the molecule contains 5 Carbon atoms and 12 Hydrogen atoms… Cont…
