The amount of daylight hours experienced in different parts of the world varies greatly depending on latitude. Generally, the higher the latitude, the greater the variability in daylight hours. In particular, locations close to the Arctic and Antarctic circles experience the greatest variability in daylight hours due to the extreme tilt of the earth. During the summer months, these high latitudes experience up to 24 hours of daylight, while during the winter months they experience as little as 6 hours of daylight (Henderson, 2015). The amount of daylight experienced in high latitudes is highly dependent on the season. In the summer, the sun is up for most of the day, while in the winter, the sun sets quickly and stays down for a longer period of time (Bamford, 2011). Additionally, the angle of the sun is lower in the sky during the winter months, resulting in shorter and weaker sunlight hours (Henderson, 2015).
