The Effects of NADH Dehydrogenase Deficiency on the Quality of Life of Individuals

NADH dehydrogenase deficiency, also known as Complex I deficiency, is an inherited disorder caused by a mutation in the mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase enzyme. This enzyme is responsible for converting energy from the oxidation of NADH to ATP, which is essential for normal cellular functioning. Consequently, individuals with Complex I deficiency have a range of serious and life-threatening symptoms due to the impaired production of ATP. As a result, their quality of life is significantly compromised. A recent study conducted by Wojcik et al. (2020) analyzed the quality of life of individuals with NADH dehydrogenase deficiency. The results of this study revealed that affected individuals suffer from a range of physical, mental, and emotional issues. Specifically, individuals with NADH dehydrogenase deficiency reported increased fatigue, difficulty sleeping, decreased mobility, and emotional distress. Additionally, the study reported increased risks of depression and anxiety among those affected. This indicates that individuals with the disorder may be suffering from a range of physical and mental health conditions that significantly reduce their quality of life.
Furthermore, another study by Kudlicka et al. (2016) explored the impact of NADH dehydrogenase deficiency on the daily lives of individuals.
