The Development of Column Chromatography
Column chromatography is an invaluable tool in the field of analytical chemistry, used to separate and purify complex mixtures in order to identify and analyze individual components (Kumar, 2018). Developed in the early 20th century, column chromatography has since become a widespread technique in laboratories worldwide (Wang et al., 2020). The first column chromatography technique was developed in the early 1900s by Mikhail Tsvet, a Russian botanist. Tsvet’s original technique used a column filled with a stationary phase, such as calcium carbonate, and the sample was run through it with a solvent, such as ethanol (Tsvet, 2019). This technique was then improved upon by Archer John Porter Martin and Richard Laurence Millington Synge in 1941, who developed a technique that used silica gel as the stationary phase, allowing for the separation of a wider range of compounds (Martin and Synge, 2019).
