The Amazon River watershed is the largest watershed in the world, containing approximately 20% of all of the freshwater on the planet (Bates & Cronkleton, 2017). Spanning an area of 7,050,000 square kilometres across nine countries in South America, the Amazon River is the largest river in the world by discharge volume, and its basin is by far the largest in the world (Gould, 2018). The Amazon River is fed by several large tributaries, including the Negro, Ucayali, and Madeira rivers, as well as thousands of smaller rivers and streams (Gould, 2018).
