The 2010 Haiti earthquake was one of the most catastrophic natural disasters to ever occur in the region. On January 12, 2010, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti, leaving more than 230,000 people dead and an estimated 1.5 million people homeless (Gelman, 2017). The earthquake caused widespread destruction of infrastructure, homes, and buildings, and triggered a humanitarian crisis in the small Caribbean nation (“Earthquake in Haiti,” 2020). This disaster posed a significant challenge for the humanitarian community and the Haitian government, as the nation’s fragile healthcare and economic systems were unable to respond adequately to the needs of the population.
