Redistricting Georgia’s 14 Congressional Districts for Fairness: A Case Study in Anti-Gerrymandering

Redistricting is the process of redrawing electoral district boundaries to ensure fair representation of citizens in the voting process. In Georgia, this process is especially important given the historic 2020 presidential election results. In order to ensure that the majority party in the presidential election would win a majority of districts, fair redistricting is necessary. Computers are capable of making the trillions of calculations needed to create fair decisions, but as noted by the National Conference of State Legislatures, “it is necessary for humans to make the final judgment calls” (“Redistricting”). To this end, Georgia has created the Redistricting Advisory Committee and the Redistricting Oversight Committee to conduct public hearings, review proposals, and weigh in on the final plan (“Redistricting”).
