In Plato’s “Laws,” the philosopher expresses a deep skepticism regarding the role of pleasure and amusement in the life of individuals and society. He considers it to be an indulgence that leads to excess, ultimately causing people to lose their virtue and ruin their character. For Plato, the pursuit of pleasure is dangerous as it creates desires which are difficult – if not impossible – to satisfy. Furthermore, he argues that when citizens become too reliant on amusement there is very little room for “the genuine desire for wisdom [which] will evaporate” (Plato 6).
