Mission, vision, values, and strategic goals are all important elements of an organization’s strategic planning process and can be closely interrelated. According to a 2019 article in the Journal of Business Strategy, the mission of an organization refers to the “reason for its existence,” while the vision describes the “aspirational goals and long-term aspirations” of the organization (Smith, 2019). Values, on the other hand, refer to the “core beliefs and principles that guide the organization’s actions and decisions” (Smith, 2019). Strategic goals, meanwhile, are “specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound” objectives that an organization sets in order to achieve its vision and fulfill its mission (Smith, 2019).
