Deception in interrogation refers to the use of misleading or false information by law enforcement officers during questioning in order to obtain a confession or other valuable information. This practice has been the subject of much ethical and legal debate in recent years. The use of deception in interrogation dates back to at least the early 20th century, with the advent of the Reid technique (Inbau et al., 2019). However, it was not until the Supreme Court case of Frazier v. Cupp in 1969 that the use of deception in interrogation was specifically addressed in the United States (Frazier v. Cupp, 1969).
