Indigenous knowledges are rich and diverse cultural understandings of the world that have been passed down through generations in North America. This knowledge has been used for centuries to guide Indigenous peoples in their relationship with the land, as well as with each other. In Canada, many Nations have distinct understandings of their place within the natural environment, which are often based on traditional stories and teachings from Elders. These understandings provide a unique perspective on how humans interact with the land, animals, plants and various elements that make up our environment.

In general terms, Indigenous knowledges encompass a holistic view of life that is deeply rooted in history and culture. Many Indigenous communities take great pride in their ability to maintain this knowledge over time by passing it down through generation after generation. It is said that “[i]ndigenous knowledges were born out of generations-old practices developed by First Peoples adapting to changes in landscape while preserving important ways of living” (Institute on Governance). As such, these experiences become part of one’s personal identity – something very difficult to describe using words alone but essential when discussing what it means to be an Indigenous person today.
