There is a growing body of research on the impact of gender and ethnicity on sports. A recent study published in the Journal of Sport Management in 2020 found that “female athletes continue to face barriers to participation and experience discrimination, including lower levels of funding, media coverage, and access to facilities” (Lench, 2020). Another study published in the International Journal of Sports Science and Coaching in 2019 found that Black athletes in the United States “are often underrepresented in certain sports, particularly those that are financially lucrative” (Jones, 2019). In addition to these issues, research has also shown that ethnic and racial minority groups face additional challenges in the sports industry. A study published in the Journal of Sport Management in 2021 found that “minority ethnic coaches are underrepresented at all levels of sport and face numerous barriers to progression” (Smith et al., 2021).
