Economic class is a critical determining factor in the sentencing of justice-involved individuals as it affects their ability to access resources and legal representation, resulting in disparate outcomes. In the United States criminal justice system, wealth plays an undeniable role in how sentences are handed out; there is evidence that those with more economic resources often receive less punitive sentences (Uggen & Manza, 2002). This discrepancy can be seen across all stages of the criminal justice process—from pretrial proceedings to probation decisions. By examining cases regarding economic class disparity on an individual level, one can better understand its impact on both sentencing and equity within the judicial system.
