Heat Capacity and Temperature Change of Nickel: A Thermodynamic Study (2015-2022)
According to the law of conservation of energy, when two pieces of nickel with different initial temperatures are placed in a calorimeter and allowed to come to the same final temperature, the energy released or absorbed by the two pieces is equal. In this case, a piece of metallic nickel initially at 120°C has three times the mass of a piece of nickel initially at 60.0°C. To find the final temperature, the total energy released while cooling the two pieces of nickel must be calculated (Wang, 2019). The energy released by a piece of nickel can be calculated using the equation Q=mc?T, where m is the mass of the nickel, c is the specific heat of the nickel, and ?T is the change in temperature of the nickel (Vogel, 2020). By applying this equation to both pieces of nickel and equating the total energy released from the two pieces, the final temperature can be calculated. The specific heat of nickel is 0.444 J/gK (Wang, 2019). Cont…
