As a manager, it is my responsibility to make ethical and fair decisions that prioritize the well-being and safety of our customers. In this situation, I would consider using a utilitarian approach, where the greatest good is achieved for the greatest number of people. This could involve prioritizing orders from customers who serve a larger number of people, such as supermarkets, over smaller stores. However, it is also important to consider the needs and concerns of all of our customers, and finding a solution that is fair and transparent. As for altering the production method to get the product on the market sooner, it is not ethical to compromise the quality of the product for the sake of meeting demand. According to the Institute of Medicine’s report “The Future of Drug Safety” (2018), “The use of lower-quality materials or inadequate manufacturing processes can result in the production of substandard or falsified products, which can pose serious risks to public health.” It is not worth putting the health and safety of our customers at risk in order to meet a temporary increase in demand.
