I agree with the idea that mental illness is a myth, as proposed by Thomas Szasz. According to Szasz, mental illness is a socially constructed concept used to control behavior and prescribe remedies for social problems. He argues that what we call “mental illnesses” are actually just ways of looking at some experiences or behaviors that do not fit within society’s accepted norms. He further suggests that instead of labeling certain activities as sick or abnormal, we should view them from different perspectives and attempt to understand their root causes. In this way, he believes it is possible to resolve many of those issues without resorting to potentially harmful treatments like medication.

Szasz’s views on mental illness have been widely criticized, with many arguing there are clear biological differences between physical illness and psychological disorders. For example, depression has been linked to alterations in brain chemistry which can be treated using drugs and/or counseling sessions; while anxiety may stem from an imbalance in hormones or genes which can only be addressed through medication or lifestyle changes.
