The concept of identity is one of the most important concepts that I have come to understand based on my own childhood experiences. Identity is an idea that I had thought about from a young age, but it wasn’t until I was older and more capable of understanding the nuances of self-discovery and expression that I really began to comprehend its significance. From being exposed to different cultures – which has been integral throughout my life, thanks in part to growing up with two Indian immigrant parents – to experiencing puberty and becoming aware of both physical and mental changes as well as learning how these interacted with other people’s perceptions and expectations, helped me not just develop a sense of who I am but also inspired me to be genuinely accepting towards those around me who might be going through their own self-discovery process (Mukherjee & O’Reilly 2017; Betsch et al. 2019).
