Construct an extended response of 500-1000 words for each question you choose.

Question 1
 
What is the role of mass reproducibility (facsimile, imitation, shanzhai, counterfeit, etc.) in transforming and/or modernizing art and related creative practices in 20th  21st century China? Focus on one era, more specifically, and 1-2 artists or artworks, and two readings to elaborate your response.
 
Question 3
How does the question of legitimacy surrounding copy-based art (woodcuts, shanzhai, Dafen Village, propaganda art, etc.) complicate the master narrative of contemporary art in China? Does copy-based art problematize the narrative, reconfigure it, or affect it in an entirely different way? Draw on two readings and two in-depth visual analyses or interpretations of works of art in your response.
 
Question 5
Conduct a close reading and visual analysis or interpretation of one work of art addressed at some point during the semester (you may also choose a work by an artist not covered in class, provided you can connect the artist or work to the course themes). Draw on at least two readings to aid your response.
 
 
Question 6
In your view, are traditional mediums (such as oil painting, ink painting, calligraphy, woodblock print, woodcut) capable of addressing contemporary problems? Why or why not? Following that, name 1-2 examples youve seen of a successful reimagining of traditional art forms in the context of modern or contemporary art. Draw on two readings. Please include visual analysis or interpretation in your response.
