Why case study research? Case study research (Burkholder et al., 2019) is an in-depth, rigorous analysis of a specific event, situation, organization, or social unit. A case study sample size is usually a sample of one but can include other samples if the study is a multiple-case study. The case study design allows the researcher the flexibility to analyze a group, individual, role, or nation. It is ideal when the researcher must show the findings from an individual and group perspective in the same context. Yin (2018) stated that because the phenomenon and the context are not always apparent, the case study depends on multiple data sources for validation.
The case study design is not based on the method; its main objective is the unit of study or specifications. One crucial step is to identify the case and the bounded unit. What to be answered, “that is the case.” “What is part of the study, and what data is not part of the case.” After identifying the case, the data collection and the method can be decided. (Yin 2018) An additional benefit of a case study is the development of a concept is formed by the bounded phenomena of interest, and not the method. Hence, allowing the researcher to conduct various studies under the same umbrella. (Burkholder et al., 2019) There are many advantages to selecting the case study research, for example: (Burkholder et al., 2019)
Case study research helps the researcher focus only on the confinement of space and time in a specific study.
Case study research gives a comprehensive understanding of the bouned unit and allows the reader to learn from the study’s outcome.
A case study offers the researcher the options to collect data like interviews, observation, surveys, and documents. When using a survey, the collected data should be valid and reliable. Interviews should be conducted using the interview protocol.
A case study allows others to use the information learned in other cases.
Data collection (Burkholder et al., 219) is driven by the type of research question the researcher is attempting to answer. The research question also determines the questions to be asked during an interview, what to observe, the documents to review, and the type of artifacts to be examined.

Grounded theory is a technique of organized qualitative research in which theory is developed from collected data while carrying out the research. Anselm Strauss and Barney Glaser developed this theory. After collection of the data, theories are developed and analyzed. Therefore, it is opposite to the scientific research methods. Various standards and guidelines for analysis and collection of data are made available to the qualitative researchers through grounded theory. Inductive reasoning is employed in this theory. The data collection techniques used by this theory are: Observing data at field, conducting interviews of participants, and understanding Artifacts. In grounded theory, first step is data collection and marking key points with a series of codes. These codes are put under groups of similar concepts. Then categories of this concepts are prepared. After that theory is developed according to this category.
Case study research is a technique which concentrates on attribute or issue, investigate it with either qualitative dataset or quantitative data set, evaluate the actions identified and recommend the best course of action. In the given case attrition of employees which affects the company’s prospect is identified as prime concern for Whirlpool and the study revolves around identifying impact, predict an employee will leave and prevent it by suitable action. as study is a technique to investigate and analyze a particular or combined issue with a goal to understand the boundaries of the issue and in-depth exploration of the behavior pattern of all the stakeholders related to the issue. Case study approach is a flexible approach which provides variety which may not be possible in other qualitative methods. It uses multiple sources to collect data such as interviews, observations etc. and analyze primary and secondary (official data, newspaper etc.) sources of data. In the given case Whirlpool has a system to recruit diverse workforce but they have identified a particular issue of employee attrition, they are trying to qualitatively understand the root cause of the problem, effects to the company and action plan identification to prevent the issue.
Thematic analysis: It is a qualitative data analysis technique which uses to analyze classifications and patterns related to data. This data is used to answer the question for the research. The patterns are identified using data coding, familiarizing of data, developing themes and revising them. Advantage of this approach is that it is unsupervised and no need to set categories which facilitate in capturing the unknowns. For example: If a study is done to understand the situation of health workers working in a COVID-19 hospital. Here we do not have much idea what will be the response of the workers regarding mental state, work stress, fear of being affected by the virus etc. but this will facilitate in identifying the themes or patterns. Then after identifying the patterns the study can be concentrated to may be mental state of workers or facilities they require during work and thus analysis done accordingly.
Grounded theory: It is a qualitative data analysis technique which tries to formulate a hypothesis or assumption and then try to test it through data analysis. The theory is developed once data is analyzed and thus called grounded theory. It is a flexible method but a bit complex. Here the data is analyzed to identify repeating themes, coding the emerging themes with phrase and keyword, grouping them, and finding the relation among them. Disadvantage of this method is it is exhaustive, time consuming and may be biased by the researcher. For example: The target group is asked open ended questions, their observations are recorded, and the observations are studied with codes. Like are cold drinks refreshing, hypothesis is formulated that they are refreshing, now the targeted people are interviewed with questions like do you like having it or how is the taste etc. The answer to such questions may be of various types like I like it when I feel hot or may be after dinner etc. These open-ended answers are to be analyzed to check the validity of the hypothesis.
The Word phenomenology refers to the phenomenon. The word Phenomenon means perceived objects or experiences.
The study of Phenomenology was established by Edmund Husserl. Phenomenology is the study of our real life experiences and consciousness. Phenomenology can be defined as a manner in which we can experience our everyday life. Phenomenology basically arises from our everyday experiences for being in the world.

Based on a reflection of the course materials, what research approach did you believe would be the best method for your dissertation study?
A research study has an overall structure that carries certain conventions that researchers have accepted over time to establish accuracy. Qualitative research is used to understand how people experience the world. Although, as we may have studied in this lesson, there are many approaches to qualitative research, they tend to be flexible and focus on retaining rich meaning when interpreting data.
What is a phenomenological research design? Phenomenological research is a study that attempts to understand people’s perceptions, perspectives, and understanding of a particular phenomenon. It is a descriptive research design in which the research aims to describe the structure of a phenomenon as accurately as possible. In a phenomenological study, the researcher may have had the experience related to the phenomenon in question and wants to gain a better understanding of the experiences of others.
I chose the qualitative descriptive study based on my research topic, African American Females Self Efficacy on Advancement Opportunities in Higher Education in Rural South Mississippi. So, what is the qualitative descriptive study? First, I will explain qualitative: Qualitative research targets conveying meaning and comprehension via detailed description. Due to this, it can be a powerful method for exploring educational issues that demand an understanding of complex social settings and the meaning that people within those settings bring to their real-life experiences (Acasestudy.com, 2018). So, what is the descriptive study? Descriptive studies answer questions about who, what, when, and where.
My qualitative descriptive study, African American Females Self Efficacy on Advancement Opportunities in Higher Education in Rural South Mississippi, will address African American females lived experiences on advancement opportunities in higher education and efficacy. This study will explore lived experiences of African American females who have succeeded as leaders in higher education and determine what advancement opportunities were available to their leadership development in rural South Mississippi. African Americans are citizens of the United States who have origins in any of the black populations of Africa (U.S. Legal, n.d.). Self-efficacy is an individual’s confidence in their ability to achieve a goal.

The quantitative approach is what will be used for the research dissertation study as it is believed to be the best method to addressing the study’s problem. As the research format is designed a framework is created that will hopefully help answer the research subject question. As the researcher I will seek to expose, understand and possibly describe the behavior’s that surround the subject matter. The qualitative method incorporates a structure that is conducive to the study design that will a structure that is specific to the study, the strategy used for sampling and how that variable will be measured. The quantitative method has characteristics that offer data that is measurable and can attribute to offering variable throughout the study research. During this study, the dependent variable can support and carry the subject material that take part throughout the investigation of the study. The use of its systematic processes that will aid with the investigation to source data supporting the problem and
Some of the disadvantages that the quantitative method has is that there could be issues with the survey and its design pattern. There is a possibility that there a respondents who did not experience the subject matter that will support the study. I like that fact that the qualitative method offers methods that will help to interpret and source data from interview participants that take part in focus groups or individual sessions. The functions that play a vital role in the qualitative design methods also includes observations, personal accounts of the subject material, observations and documents that will support the study. In studying which methods would support the dissertation project best, the qualitative method institutes goals that capture and test in the interest of the variables and predicts and describes that data that will need to be interpreted. It is a must for the researcher to acknowledge reality is objective and as the researcher it exist separately while being able to show that the research was conducted rigorously using the methods and the functions within the qualitative design frame. It is my opinion that the best method for me to use for my study is the qualitative design method.
