Are People Around the World Equally Vulnerable to Climate Change?

The effects of climate change are felt worldwide, but the degree to which different populations are vulnerable to those effects varies greatly. Vulnerability is determined by a combination of factors, including geography, infrastructure, economy, culture, and environmental conditions (Harvey, 2017). People living in low-lying coastal areas, for example, are more vulnerable to the impacts of sea-level rise than those living in higher-elevation areas (Wehner et al., 2018). People living in developing countries with limited resources to mitigate the impacts of climate change are more vulnerable than those in developed nations with access to more resources (Harvey, 2017). The vulnerability of different populations to climate change is further complicated by disparities in environmental justice. People of colour and low-income communities often live in areas that are more likely to experience environmental hazards, such as air pollution, and are less likely to have access to resources to prepare for and respond to climate-induced disasters (Hsiang & Jina, 2017). These disparities result in a disproportionate burden of climate change effects on certain populations, such as Indigenous people and people of color (Hsiang & Jina, 2017). Cont…
