The healthcare program or policy that I selected is the “Reduce Opioid Overprescribing” initiative. The goal of this program is to reduce the over-prescription of opioid pain medications by educating providers on proper prescribing practices and exploring alternative treatment options for acute and chronic pain management. The outcomes from this program are intended to be decreased rates of misuse, abuse, addiction, and overdose related to opioids as well as improved access to non-opioid treatments for pain management.
The success of this program was measured in terms of provider education levels regarding evidence-based guidelines and safe prescribing practices, patient satisfaction with non-opioid alternatives used to manage pain symptoms, changes in number/types of prescriptions issued by providers within a given area, overall reductions in opioid use among individuals receiving care at participating facilities, and opioid mismanagement rates within a given population.
