I chose to conduct a family health assessment on the Smith family. The Smith family is composed of two parents, Mike and Jane, who are both in their early 40s, and three children: Tom (16 years old), Steve (14 years old) and Sarah (9 years old). All members of the family identify as Caucasian. Mike is the primary provider for the household, while Jane works part-time from home as a freelance graphic designer.
choose a family in your community and conduct a family health assessment using the following questions below. 1. Family composition. Type of family, age, gender and racial/ethnic composition of the family. 2. Roles of each family member. Who is the leader in the family? Who is the primary provider? Is there any other provider? 3. Do family members have any existing physical or psychological conditions that are affecting family function?
The roles of each member vary depending on the situation at hand; however, it can be said that Mike takes on more of a leadership role within the family dynamic. He typically provides direction throughout decision-making processes and sets expectations for everyone in regards to behavior and responsibilities. In addition to being a leader, he also serves as an emotional support system for his wife and children when needed. Jane primarily serves as a caretaker – she handles most day-to-day activities such as cooking meals, managing finances, etc., in order to keep things running smoothly in their household.
As far as physical or psychological conditions go, none of them have any existing medical issues which are directly affecting their daily lives; however, Steve does suffer from depression which has caused him to struggle with self-confidence and motivation lately. As such his parents have been taking extra steps to ensure he feels supported during this time by providing additional emotional guidance whenever necessary.
