An Overview of Ontario’s Conservation Acts

Ontario has two important conservation acts: the Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Act (O. Reg. 139/90) and the Niagara Escarpment Planning and Development Act (NEPDA). These two acts have been implemented to protect and conserve the valuable natural resources of the province. Both acts recognize the importance of protecting the environment and its resources for the benefit of the public. The Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Act (O. Reg. 139/90) was established in 1990 to protect the fragile ecosystem of the Oak Ridges Moraine. It serves to limit development and protect the natural features of the moraine, while also allowing for compatible uses such as agriculture and recreation. The act also provides for the establishment of conservation authorities and land trust organizations to manage the resources of the moraine. The Niagara Escarpment Planning and Development Act (NEPDA) was established in 1985 to protect the Niagara Escarpment and its associated natural resources. The act provides for the management of land use activities, as well as the protection of significant ecological features and natural areas.
