This medical report is on the disease known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness, paralysis and eventually death. Symptoms of ALS can be subtle at first, but they quickly progress to include difficulty in speaking and breathing, loss of movement coordination, limb spasms and swallowing difficulties. In more advanced stages of ALS, patients experience complete respiratory failure due to their inability to breathe independently.
