The decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant is an incredibly difficult task. The process involves a number of different challenges that TEPCO and the Japanese government must face in order to ensure safety for workers, nearby residents, and the environment. Two of the three main problems faced by TEPCO and the Japanese government are radioactive contamination and nuclear waste storage.

Radioactive Contamination: One of the primary issues faced when attempting to decommission a nuclear power plant is managing radioactive contamination from both internal structures as well as from contaminated water from outside sources. In Fukushima, this includes contaminated groundwater which seeps into basements buildings and containment pools around damaged reactor cores. As part of their clean-up efforts, TEPCO has employed various methods including removing any surface contaminations through scraping or sandblasting, using robots to remove debris during demolition work, creating underground walls to redirect contaminated groundwater away from buildings, operating pumping systems to treat wastewater before release into oceans or rivers, etc. Furthermore they have also implemented measures such as spraying decontamination agents on areas with high levels of radiation while informing citizens about how they can reduce potential exposures at home or outdoors by minimizing time spent in those areas with higher radioactivity readings.
