Abraham Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address is a powerful example of values-based oratory. In this speech, Lincoln expresses the values of humility and responsibility, unity and reconciliation, justice and mercy. He makes it clear that these values are essential for rebuilding a divided nation, as well as for preserving the Union so that our experiment in democracy can continue to thrive.

The value of humility is expressed early on when Lincoln acknowledges his own limited understanding: “Fondly do we hope – fervently do we pray – that this mighty scourge [the Civil War] may speedily pass away…” By showing his own vulnerability, he demonstrates respect for the complexities of human life and suggests that no one individual can comprehend all the facets of an issue.
