William Shakespeare is widely regarded as the greatest playwright of all time, and his influence on theatre, history and entertainment is undeniable. He wrote dozens of plays over his lifetime, many of which are still performed today in theatres around the world. His works have been adapted into countless films, TV shows and musicals, inspiring generations of actors and creatives. Beyond the stage, he has also had a significant impact on literature, language and culture throughout history.

Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1564 to John Shakespeare and Mary Arden. Although not much is known about William’s childhood or early life (as there is no direct evidence of it), it’s believed that he attended grammar school from age 7 to 14 where he learned Latin grammar as well as elements of law, rhetoric, logic and other subjects alongside classical authors such as Virgil & Ovid. It’s likely that during this period Shakespeare began writing poetry & sonnets too – although none survive today – which would later surface in his dramatic works.
