In 2021, archaeologists announced the discovery of a 2,000-year-old burial site in southern Mexico. The site contains the remains of three people who were buried in an unusual formation – two adults and a child lying side-by-side but facing different directions. This orientation is rare for burials from this period and indicates that there may have been some special meaning to it.

Archaeologists also discovered several artifacts associated with the burial, including pottery vessels, carved stone beads, and tools used for flint knapping which suggests that these individuals held a higher social status than most other members of their society. According to carbon dating results on bone samples taken from the grave, experts believe that these individuals lived around 200 BCE.
