In Japan, death rituals trace back centuries in traditional Buddhist ceremonies that follow strict guidelines on how to honor those who have passed away. These practices typically involve cleansing rites that prepare the dead for burial or cremation. Other common elements include Buddhist prayers for protection against bad luck or evil spirits; offerings such as food, flowers, incense sticks; burning paper money; memorial services at gravesites; and several days of mourning with family members wearing white clothes. Afterward there is usually a period of seven years where no ceremony is conducted before any ancestor can be “reborn” into another life form or cycle through reincarnation according to Buddhism teachings.
