The future of Tuvalu is uncertain due to the fact that it is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to rising sea levels. As a low-lying atoll nation, located just four metres above sea level, any rise in ocean levels could have devastating consequences for its inhabitants. The impacts of climate change are already being felt on Tuvalu, with an increase in extreme weather events such as droughts and storms as well as seawater flooding over low lying coastal areas more frequently. Without drastic action taken by both the government of Tuvalu and other international actors, these trends will only worsen over time and could lead to complete inundation of the islands within this century.

In order to protect its people from these potential threats, immediate steps must be taken including investing heavily in infrastructure projects such as reinforcing coastlines with coral reefs or building embankments along shorelines. Seawalls can also be built around critical infrastructure like water treatment plants or power generators that need protection from storm surges. Additionally, creating efficient drainage systems and watershed management plans could help divert excess water away from populated areas during flood events. Establishing long-term adaptive strategies such as developing sustainable fishing practices, promoting ecotourism initiatives and diversifying income sources away from agriculture alone would also provide further resilience against environmental disasters caused by changing climate patterns.
