Divine Command Theory (DCT) is a philosophical and theological concept that states that an action’s morality is determined by whether or not it aligns with the commands of God. DCT holds that morality is derived from divine authority—God’s will, rather than being simply about what humans think or want. In essence, this theory states that “the rightness or wrongness of an action depends on its conformance to God’s commands.” DCT has been around for centuries and was part of the writings of early Christian thinkers such as Augustine and Aquinas, among many others. It has also become one of the most popular moral theories in recent years due to its widespread acceptance in both philosophical circles and religious settings alike.

Despite its popularity, Divine Command Theory has a major structural problem: it fails to provide a universally applicable way to assess if something is morally wrong or right since it relies solely on individual interpretation of God’s commands. Therefore, it can be argued that this structure leaves room for subjective opinions concerning morality which are ultimately open to personal interpretation rather than objectivity; as each person may have different interpretations regarding God’s commandments depending on their personal values and beliefs concerning religion and life in general. Additionally, since divine command theory does not seek outside validation from any other source besides itself (or religion), there can be no definitive way for individuals or groups to verify whether something truly aligns with God’s wishes without relying merely upon their own judgment – often leading them away from objective analysis which could otherwise serve as a reliable benchmark when making decisions pertaining to moral issues.
