The synapse is the junction between two neurons in the nervous system. It is where information travels through electrical and chemical signals, allowing communication between neurons. Events at the synapse are critical for the functioning of our nervous systems and for our behavior. In this article, we will discuss some of the events that occur at a synapse and how they contribute to neuronal signaling.

Presynaptic Event: An action potential is generated in an axon by voltage-gated ion channels (VGCs). These VGCs open as a result of depolarization which causes an influx of sodium ions into the neuron, activating sodium-gated potassium channels (SGCs). The SGCs then open allowing potassium ions to leave the cell resulting in repolarization. This produces an action potential that propagates down the axon to reach its terminal boutons or synaptic knobs.
