Augustus St. Clare is one of the major characters in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin. He is a wealthy plantation owner from the South and husband to Marie St. Clare, with whom he has two children: Eva and Tom Jr. Augustus is described as being tall, broad-shouldered and athletic, with dark hair and vibrant eyes that change color depending on his mood. His face is handsome but not particularly expressive—Stowe writes that “an air of haughty reserve pervaded it”—and his smile rarely extends beyond polite politeness.

He wears simple yet elegant clothing; even when dressed plainly for work outdoors on the plantation, he manages to look distinguished due to his fine posture and confident carriage. Augustus also speaks with an eloquent southern accent which conveys both charm and authority. While he appears aloof in public due to his wealth and privilege, those closest to him know that beneath this exterior lies a kind hearted man who genuinely cares about others—a quality which gains him admiration from both family members and servants alike throughout the novel.
