Evidence-Based Practice and research are two different concepts, but the two terms are often used interchangeably. Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) is a process of combining clinical expertise with the best available evidence to make decisions about patient care. It involves critically analyzing published research studies to determine what treatments or interventions are most effective for particular conditions or populations. The goal of EBP is to provide the best possible care based on current scientific evidence, rather than relying solely on personal experience or intuition. In contrast, research is an organized and systematic inquiry into a specific area of interest that has been conducted in order to generate new knowledge or test existing hypotheses. Research typically involves collecting data through observation, surveys, experiments, interviews, or other methods and then analyzing those data to draw conclusions about the relationships between variables under investigation.

Although there are some similarities between Evidence-Based Practice and research – both involve gathering information and making informed decisions – they also have distinct differences as well. One key difference lies in their respective focus: while EBP focuses on selecting the best interventions for an individual patient’s needs; research typically aims at generating generalizable knowledge by testing theories or hypotheses across multiple settings and contexts. For example, researchers may conduct a study in order to discover which treatment works better for depression – medication versus psychotherapy – whereas clinicians using EBP would use this same study to inform their decision regarding which type of treatment might be more suitable for a particular patient who suffers from depression.
