The Inferno, written by Dante Alighieri, is one of the most influential works in literature. Through this epic poem, Dante introduces readers to his concept of damnation and ascension through a journey that begins with Hell and culminates in Heaven. The work is divided into three sections; Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso. Each canto takes the reader on a different journey within these realms. In the Inferno particularly, a distinction between physical and spiritual worlds are made throughout the text. This contrast between physical body and spiritual body can be observed in two passages from Canto V: one describing Count Ugolino’s betrayal at Pisa, and the other depicting the punishment of simonists (those who try to buy their way into salvation).
