The goal of attacking forces at Verdun and the Somme in 1916 was to break through the German lines and gain tactical advantage by capturing strategic positions. The Battle of Verdun began on 21 February 1916 along a 40-kilometer stretch of France’s western front, with French forces under General Robert Nivelle commanding from the south and German Commander Erich von Falkenhayn leading from the north. During this battle, French forces were able to make significant progress by taking some strategic points but were ultimately unable to break through German defenses.

In July 1916, British Expeditionary Forces attacked the Somme River valley in Northern France as part of a joint effort with their French allies. This offensive was designed to relieve pressure on the French Army at Verdun while also providing an opportunity for British forces to reclaim lost ground. Despite initial success in gaining territory, heavy casualties due to poor command decisions led to little overall progress towards any clear goals and both sides eventually reached a stalemate after months of fighting.
