Utilizing Cohort Study Designs to Track CVD
Cohort studies have been instrumental in understanding many aspects of CVD epidemiology such as identifying associated risk factors, tracking trends over time, and monitoring changes in disease burden across different population groups. When utilized correctly, cohort studies provide valuable insight into how various environmental exposures affect CVD incidence rates and mortality rates among different population groups. For example, one recent prospective cohort study examined the association between coffee consumption and incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD) over 12 years among 40-79 year old participants from 10 European countries.[1] The authors found that coffee consumption was positively associated with CHD outcomes when considering all participants together; however, this correlation did not hold true when examining subgroups by gender or country separately.[1] These findings suggest that other confounders may be involved in the observed associations which would need additional investigation before informing public health policy decisions about coffee consumption’s role in CHD prevention or management.
