The answer to this question is that I recently questioned and challenged a belief or idea I had about the importance of standardized tests. As a student, I had always been taught that these exams were essential for college admissions and future success in order to prove one’s academic and intellectual ability. However, after researching more into the topic I began to realize how much emphasis was being put on these tests versus other experiences such as extracurriculars, volunteerism and internships which provide valuable real-world skills. This prompted me to think deeper about why we prioritize certain accomplishments over others when it comes time deciding who should be accepted into higher educational institutions.

I decided to challenge my beliefs by speaking with teachers, counselors and mentors who could offer ideas different from my own. Through conversations with them, they helped me understand ways that colleges look at applicants outside of their test scores. This included things like showing potential through essays or interviews which often give insight into an individual’s character rather than just their intelligence level.
