As life expectancy increases, the elderly population is growing quickly. As of 2017, there were an estimated 46 million seniors in the United States, representing 14.7 percent of the total population (Woods et al., 2020). Nursing care for this population has become increasingly important due to increasing health care needs and the potential for exacerbation of existing problems. Elderly patients often require specialized nursing attention that focuses on their age-specific needs, such as promoting independence and autonomy while controlling symptoms associated with chronic diseases or disabilities (Fangst et al., 2019). Consequently, nurses should make older adults a focus of teaching and learning activities within their practice in order to provide optimal patient outcomes.
