Noble cause corruption is a form of police misconduct that occurs when officers are motivated by the perceived greater good or justice, rather than by adherence to established laws and regulations. Noble cause refers to an officer’s belief that their actions will ultimately lead to a desirable outcome in spite of any short-term violations of the law (Lundman, 1980). This can take many forms such as overlooking petty criminal activity or stretching the truth during an investigation in order to make an arrest. Officers often rationalize their actions by believing that whatever harm was caused by them was for the benefit of society overall.
