Translanguaging practices are a powerful way to create scaffolding structures for the language development of multilingual students. Translanguaging is where people use both languages interchangeably and in multiple ways, not just one language at a time (Canagarajah, 2016). Through translanguaging, students can draw on their linguistic resources while communicating in any given context or situation. As described by García & Wei (2014), translanguaging “is a process that mobilizes all of the speaker’s semiotic resources simultaneously or nearly so…[emphasizing] the potential value of each student’s linguistic repertoire as an empowering social resource to face educational challenges.” In other words, through translanguaging, multilingual students are able to make meaningful connections between their different languages while also developing deeper proficiency in each one.
