In the past, police officers have been trained to secure a crime scene before attending to any injured persons discovered at the location. Although this might seem like an ethical thing to do from a certain point of view, it is not necessarily so from another perspective. This is because of the fact that securing evidence may take precedence over tending to victims in some cases and this could result in further injury or even death for some people involved. It has thus become increasingly important for officers to be trained on how best to respond in emergency situations first before they attend to securing evidence which may be lost or destroyed as a consequence of their response time (Schneider, 2016).
