When responding officers are faced with a potentially dangerous call, there are certain factors they should consider in order to ensure their safety. A “hot” call is one that involves volatile or unstable circumstances that could quickly escalate into violence or other hazardous situations (Nelson-Lugo, 2020). The primary consideration for responding officers is their own safety and the safety of others. Officers should remain aware of their environment, be prepared for any potential threats, and keep an open line of communication with dispatch during the entire situation (Nelson-Lugo, 2020). Additionally, some departments employ tactical response procedures such as setting up perimeters around the scene and containing any bystanders (Hickman & Prenzler 2012).
