The catabolism of dipalmitoylphosphatidylserine (DPPS) is a series of hydrolysis reactions. It begins with the hydrolysis of the phospholipid by phospholipase D (PLD), which hydrolyzes the phosphodiester bond in DPPS to form phosphatidic acid (PA). PA is further hydrolyzed by phosphatidate phosphatase (PAP) to form diacylglycerol (DAG) and a phosphate group. DAG is then hydrolyzed by monoacylglycerol lipase (MGL) to form glycerol and a fatty acid. The fatty acid is then oxidized by ?-oxidation in the mitochondria to form acetyl-CoA and NADH. Finally, acetyl-CoA is used in the Krebs cycle to produce ATP. The catabolism of DPPS is essential for the production of energy and the maintenance of cell membrane integrity. It also plays an important role in signal transduction and cell growth. For example, the hydrolysis of DPPS by PLD has been shown to activate signal transduction pathways that regulate cell growth, apoptosis, and autophagy (Gao et al., 2016; Park et al., 2021).
