The Arctic Council: A Global Forum for Cooperation

The Arctic Council is an intergovernmental forum, founded in 1996, that seeks to promote cooperation, coordination and interaction among the Arctic states, Arctic indigenous communities, and other Arctic inhabitants on common Arctic issues, in particular, conservation and sustainable development of the Arctic environment. The members of the Council are Canada, Denmark (including Greenland and the Faroe Islands), Finland, Iceland, Norway, Russia, Sweden and the United States. In addition, the Council includes six Permanent Participants, representing the Arctic Indigenous peoples. The main purpose of the Arctic Council is to address and respond to the environmental, economic and social challenges of the Arctic region and to promote sustainable development. The Arctic Council is the leading intergovernmental forum for the Arctic region and provides a platform for dialogue and cooperation between the Arctic states and the Arctic indigenous peoples. The Council is responsible for the Arctic Environmental Protection Strategy (AEPS) and the Arctic Marine Strategic Plan (AMSP), which are two of the most important documents in the field of Arctic environmental protection and sustainable development.
